The Department of Public Health has recently issued a Circular Letter regarding Schedule II Opioids: Prescription Form Requirements and Patient Requests for Partial Fill. This circular letter is from the Acting Director, Bureau of Health Professions Licensure and the Director, Bureau of Health Care Safety and Quality and is dated December 16, 2016.
Effective March 14, 2016:
(1) patients have the right to request less than the prescribed amount of an opioid; and
(2) prescribers must include a notation on the prescription that the patient may request an amount less than that prescribed.
Pharmacists may dispense less than the prescribed quantity if requested by the patient and the remaining quantities on the prescription would be void.
Prescriptions must have the following phrase:
“Partial fill upon patient request”
A pharmacist receiving a prescription for a Schedule II opioid without the required notation must contact the prescriber or prescriber’s authorized agent for confirmation and document the notation on the prescription.
